The Ankara Picnic Story:
Growing up I was a very picky eater. Even Kebabs, which is a world wide food, was too foreign for me. (Kind of ironic since I’m Korean-American, “ethnic” to the world). However, my world changed for the better when I started to travel to other countries. After visiting Turkey, my love for Turkish foods especially kebabs and rice plates, was something I couldn’t get enough of.
When you think about Turkish fast food in Seoul, Korea you think about Itaewon. This week I got to get my doner kebab fix at Itaewon’s Ankara Picnic. Ankara Picnic has been a staple for Kebabs in Itaewon for years. They are a very small but hard working restaurant. The workers are lively and nice. When you enter the small restaurant, it has a very friendly vibe and feel to it.
When weather permits they open up their big glass window where you can see their open kitchen. Inside they have two shawarma spits which rotates and cooks their lamb and chicken to perfection. It’s very mesmerizing seeing the spits cook the food. You see the juices of the meat when they workers cut up the meat. Just thinking about that makes me hungry!
I had visited Ankara Picnic after a night out in Itaewon. Their menu is filled kebabs, sandwiches, rice plates, and rice boxes. After glancing over the menu I decided to order a Chicken Rice to-go and a Lamb Kebab to eat there. From the pictures you can see that the seating is very limited inside, so I decided to hold the Kebab and eat it outside while talking with a friend.
The Food Ordered At Ankara Picnic:
Taste: The Lamb Kebab was solid. You had the gamy flavor from the lamb mixed with the fresh veggies; lettuce, tomatoes and pickles. Then it is covered with white sauce and red sauce which tasted great. The lamb was cooked very nicely and it wasn’t overly chewy, like how lamb can become. The white sauce brings a refreshing cool taste to it. Their red sauce is very flavorful. I am a spicy fan, so I wished the red sauce was a bit more spicier, but like I mentioned... the tastes of the sauce was great.
Taste: The Chicken Rice is so good. It starts with a bed of flavorful white rice. It tastes like the rice was cooked in some kind of stock, with all the flavors coming from it. On top of the rice is thinly shaved chicken. I had asked to make my Chicken Rice extra spicy so they topped it off with red sauce. They had a side of white sauce and extra red sauce in the side containers. Also, they had a small corner filled with tomatoes, pickles, and onions that you could eat with your Chicken Rice. When you use your spork to pour some white sauce and red sauce over the Chicken Rice your mouth is hit with flavor. Last, you take a bite of the veggies which brings that fresh factor!
Overall Ankara Picnic’s protein taste very good. They rotisserie cook the meats very nicely, and the end product is amazing. If you are in Itaewon and are craving something cheap and quick, I would recommend you to try Ankara Picnic.
