The Gusto Taco Story:
May 27, 2019
Gusto Tacos is a Mexican restaurant located in Hongdae. Today I went to visit the Hongdae location that is near Sangsu Station exit one. The location is on the 2nd floor and was a well lit restaurant so it was easy to find. Outside they had a industrial style look with a lot of metal and a glass balcony.
I had gone at around 7pm on a Friday night for dinner and the place was filled up. They had one really big table in the middle of the restaurant that was available for reservation, and a bunch of smaller tables around the side of the restaurant.
The decor inside was minimalistic, with a lot of wood and red brick interior. The restaurant also had big opened windows, which looked pretty inside and outside.
Gustos has a wide range of Mexican food, but before we get to the menu I wanted to point out that Gustos offer a Daily Set Menu. They offer the set menu for 1, 2, 4, or 6 people. It worth looking into if you are trying to order and try a lot of food.
The menu was huge. They offered tacos, burritos, chimichangas, nachos, quesadillas, sandwiches and burgers, salads, and a side menu. I had gone with a group of my friends so we decided to try an array of foods. We ordered a burrito, 2 different types of tacos, and a quesadilla. We sat down ready to grub and try the well known Gusto Taco's food.
The Food Ordered At Gusto Taco:
Ground Beef Tacos
Taste: The Ground Beef Tacos weren’t big but they weren’t small either. There was much more tortilla than filling. It was simple with a flour tortilla, ground beef, sour cream, salsa, and cilantro. The tortilla was very tasty and the ground beef was seasoned nicely. However it just seemed like an upgraded Taco Bell taco, but more expensive.
Chipotle Pork Tacos
Taste: The Chiptole Pork Tacos contained the same contents as the Ground Beef except the protein was different. The Chipotle Pork was slow cooked and extremely soft. The worker had told us that they were most known for their pork and he wasn't wrong. The pork was delicious!
Grilled Chicken Burrito
Taste: The Chicken Burrito was ok size for a burrito in Korea. It had flour tortilla, chicken, Mexican rice, cheese, and tomato salsa. The chicken was cooked nicely and was soft and tender. They gave an extra side of hot sauce which wasn’t overly spicy and gave the burrito a nice wetness. For 13,000won its quiet hefty price tag for a burrito... but it was good.
Ground Beef Quesadilla
Taste: Literally there was nothing special about this Ground Beef Quesadilla. It was super simple with a big flour tortilla, ground beef, and cheeses. If you are paying 11,000won for a quesadilla... but it wasn't special.
Bottom line, Gusto Taco has built a very big following over the years in Korea. I could totally see why people flocked around to Gusto Taco when they first opened. They make good Tex-Mex food and their pork meat is delicious. However... as of 2019 there are so many great Mexican food spots that have opened up recently. The food for their price in my opinion is just 'OK'.
