The Motor City Story:
January 02, 2018
Motor City is a pizza restaurant that has been gaining a big following and popularity in Korea. Their first shop was opened in Itaewon, and today I was able to visit their second location in Gangnam! Motor City makes Detroit style pizza. You might be wondering what is Detroit style pizza? Most people are familiar with New York style or Chicago style pizza, but Detroit style pizza is not as mainstream. Detroit style pizza is most similar to the Chicago style pizza, however the pizza is rectangle shaped and the crust is extra thick. A good Detroit style pizza has a thick crust, crispy bottom, good cheese, and sauce. I had rarely heard or seen what a Detroit style pizza was when I was growing up in Los Angeles. Little Caesars created the first commercial Detroit Style pizza in the US, which brought more notoriety to this delicious style.
Motor City Gangnam is located near Yeoksam Station, inside the building Arc Place’s Urban Courts (same location as Nori Table). Inside Urban Courts you are greeted with delicious smells and many great restaurants. The restaurants are all opened spaced restaurants, where you are able to see inside the restaurant space from the outside. The restaurant inside is decently spaced, but it isn’t huge. It seems like a very cool and good spot for a lunch date or meeting with friends. They had two sides for seating and a big kitchen in the middle back area of the restaurant.
Inside they had a very metal/chrome vibe going on. The restaurant is called Motor City... Detroit’s nickname is the Motor City... and cars are made from metal and chrome parts. So the decorations were all tied down to its name and roots. They had a nice chrome sign that read 'Motor City Detroit Style Pizza' when entering and a mirror that also had Motor City letters on top it. Other than those decorations the restaurant was very minimal and clean looking.
I had gone to Motor City with a friend and we decided to order one Detroit style pizza and an order of wings. (Small note* I had heard from a friend that Motor City’s fries are really good, but the friend I went with doesn’t like potatoes so we didn’t order any fries). We were glancing through the menu and after getting suggestions we decided to order The Classic for our pizza and Buffalo for our wings.
The Food Ordered At Motor City :
Taste: At a first glance The Classic Pizza was a lot smaller than I imagined it would be. It was a rectangle pan pizza that was a little bit bigger than the size of a laptop. The pizza was cut into 8 rectangle slices. The edges looked crispy (had the nice melted cheese edges) and tasty. The pizza was topped with cheese, pepperoni, and dabs of tomato sauce was placed on top of each slice. Each slice had a nice heft to it, even for it being such a small piece. Taking a bite into the pizza you are greeted with different textures and taste. First you taste the tangy delicious sauce, juicy & salty pepperoni, and the cheese. Then it follows with this soft pillow like pizza dough, and at the end you taste the crunchy crust. The slices might be small, but the pizza is pretty delicious.
Taste: The Buffalo Wings we’re pretty standard but delicious buffalo wings. The wings were dressed with Franks Red Hot Sauce (love this sauce), butter, and cayenne pepper. They give you a side of blue cheese ranch sauce to dip the wings. The wings size was pretty decent. The wings were covered evenly and nicely in sauce. They had plenty of meat on the wings and was a good side dish to share.
Bottom line the meal was delicious. Other than the pizza being way smaller than I anticipated and the toppings being just ok, everything was great.
