The Pizza Express Story:

October 31, 2018

Today I went to Apgujeong’s Pizza Express.  Pizza Express is located in one of the small alleys of Apgujeong’s Garosugil.  For those who don't know where or what Apgujeong Garosugil is let me break it down for you.  According to Trip-advisor, they describes Garosugil as: "Known for its tree-lined streets, Garosu-Gil attracts an alternative crowd with its unique bohemian-chic vibe. It favors designer and artists shops, and features open studios, workshops, and bars."  At Garosugil it won't be uncommon to see models, model shoots, and even celebrities hanging out there.  This place is a hot-spot for Koreans and tourists because of its vibes, beautiful cafes,  unique shopping places, and restaurants.

Just like its neighborhood the vibes at Pizza Express’s are dope.  Outside you are greeted with four colored plastic chairs and a neon sign that says Pizza Express.  When you walk down the stairs into the restaurant you are greeted with more neon lights and modern hip hop music blasting.  The inside decoration were placed so well and they were all fun to look at.  They had modern art, skateboards, and a punching bag placed around the restaurant.  The inside vibes matched the trendiness of Garosugil.

Pizza Express has a huge open kitchen area.  You are able to see all the workers create and make the pizzas as they work.  The workers were very kind and answered any questions I had.  It was my first time there, so they gave me recommendations and told me what their favorite slices were.  I even saw the workers speaking English to the American customers behind me, to try to accommodate their needs.  After ordering they offered me a stamp card (loyalty card), where if I order an X amount of pizzas I could get a free slice.

Pizza Express's menu owns 7 types of pizza; NY Cheese, Meat Cheese, Double Pepperoni, Hawaiian, Truffle Rucola, Spicy Meat Cheese, and Today’s.  They also have beers on tap and fries, hot wings, and/or salad as sides.  After looking over the menu I decided to get a bunch of different slices, that way I can try and review a good range of their pizzas.

The Food Ordered At Pizza Express:

NY Cheese Pizza

Price: 4,500won

Taste:  When in doubt, I learned to order cheese pizza.  So for the first pizza I decided to go with their normal NY Cheese Pizza.  The pizza visually looked pretty good.  It also had a nice crust and hold to it.  The first bite however was underwhelming. The cheese wasn’t stringy or that tasty.  To be blunt, their cheese sucks.  Also, I couldn’t really taste much of the sauce.  It was just an under performing cheese pizza with a good crust.  I honest had to add a lot of red pepper, parmesan cheese, and Tabasco to upgrade the taste.

Spicy Meat Cheese Pizza

Price: 6,000won

Taste:  Next I ordered the Spicy Meat Pizza.  The menu said that this pizza was made for grown ups, which I thought meant it would be super spicy... but it wasn't.  While the Spicy Meat was not spicy at all, the meat gave a lot more flavor to the pizza which was nice.  The fattiness and meatiness taste from the meat blobs made this pizza much better than the NY Cheese Pizza.

Truffle Rucola (Arugula) Pizza

Price:  6,000won

Taste:  The Truffle Rucola was interesting.  The truffle and rucola (arugula) gave the pizza an earthy and healthy taste.  It wasn’t my favorite, but it wasn't bad either.  It tasted exactly like how it looked like.  You first taste the the greeny arugula, then the truffles, and last the pizza.  Mixed together was an interesting combination.

Hawaiian Pizza

Price:  5,500won

Taste:  The Hawaiian Pizza was surprisingly good.  I know some people swear against pineapple on pizza, but I personally do not mind it.  You get the saltiness from the ham and sweetness from the pineapple, which elevated thee pizza and made it good!

Bottom line

Overall, since the base of the pizza (the cheese) was just whatever... I can’t say this place is great.  However, if you order the pizzas with toppings it averages out to be an OK pizza joint.  If you are in the area and you really want a slice of pizza in an environment with cool vibes, it’s a place you could check out.
